Post-MSN Certificate Program
The College of Health Sciences offers a Post-Master’s Certificate in a second nursing specialty or role for nurses who have completed a master of science in nursing degree. Certificate options include:
- Rural Health Family Nurse Practitioner
- Rural Psychiatric Mental Health Practitioner
- Public Health Nursing
- Nursing Education
The number of credit hours required for completion varies by specialty or role. All MSN policies apply to the Post-MSN Certificate students.

Admission Requirements
Minimum requirements for admission to the program include:
- Admission to the Graduate School
- A master of science in nursing degree
- A free and unrestricted R.N. license in Kentucky (or a
recognized compact state) with no Kentucky Board of
Nursing imposed restrictions on practice, voluntary or
otherwise
Admission is competitive and limited to available space. In addition to the above criteria, consideration is also given to the student’s statement of Personal and Professional Objectives submitted with the
Graduate School application (
http://www.gradschool.eku.edu/apply/default.php), the three required Professional References and the rural nature of the site identified for matriculation or proposed for future practice. Priority is given to degree-seeking applications. Application deadline is
February 15. Admission may be granted at other times during the year if spaces are available.
Application Process
A student seeking admission to the Post-MSN Certificate program at Eastern Kentucky University must apply for admission to the Graduate School indicating the desired option. The student is responsible for submitting completed materials to the Graduate School, including:
- Graduate School Application Form (http://www.gradschool.eku.edu/apply/default.php)
- Transcripts of all previous college work (except course work taken at Eastern Kentucky University)
- Application fee $35.00

Scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Miller Analogies Test (MAT). Applications to take the GRE may be obtained from Educational Testing Service (www.ets.org). The Miller Analogies Test is administered through the EKU Academic Testing Office (http://www.testing.eku.edu/miller/) (phone: 859-622-1281).
Please note that a narrative statement relating your personal and professional goals for graduate study is a required part of the application process. This narrative statement should be considered a very important part of your application. Faculty will use this statement to evaluate your written communication skills as well as to evaluate the relationship of your career goals to those of the program.
